Faces of Paerata Rise

Paerata Rise isn’t just a place where houses are built, it’s where families grow, neighbours wave hello across the street, and dreams take root. Nestled in the semi-rural outskirts of South Auckland, this township has been designed to bring people together, create spaces for kids to laugh and play, and foster corners where friendships blossom.

Here, the people are what make it special. From families laying down roots to the hands shaping parks and gardens, and the watchful eyes keeping everyone safe, the residents of Paerata Rise are the heartbeat of the community.

“It takes a village”: Keely Ballentine’s story

For Keely Ballentine, a young working mum, Paerata Rise offered a rare opportunity: to raise her children just doors away from her mum, sister and nephews.

“Truly, it’s such a rare opportunity to live so close together. To make this happen in an existing suburb would be pure luck, but building and buying next to each other is something you can only get in a place like Paerata Rise,” she explains.

What started as occasional visits quickly turned into a real plan. “We spent the whole 45-minute drive home talking about the what-ifs, benefits (hello child-sharing for school holidays!) and by the time we got home, we realised we weren’t just daydreaming – we really wanted to move.”

Now, Keely’s kids enjoy a close-knit upbringing where neighbours feel like an extension of family. “It’s really the embodiment of ‘it takes a village’!” she says, smiling.

Paerata Rise is sprinkled with little moments that make it feel like home. From community markets to whimsical fairy trails and seasonal events like trick-or-treating, the township hums with warmth.

“We love exploring all the playgrounds nearby… our favourite spot is actually the Primary School playground!” she shares. “Everybody here is so friendly. Many neighbours have moved here to be close to their family, and it’s such a great community vibe.”

Designing a living landscape: Dave Hyde’s vision

While families bring life to the streets, landscaper Dave Hyde shapes the green spaces that make Paerata Rise feel like home. His goal? To create spaces where people and nature can thrive together.

“My inspiration, which matches the Paerata Rise philosophy, is to create a family-friendly environment with places for play, exercise, rest, and interest,” Dave says.

Every plant has a purpose. Native species attract colourful birds, offer shelter, and act as gentle windbreaks. Meandering walkways and boardwalks guide residents through rain gardens and wetlands, turning every stroll into a small adventure.

“The natural environment, streams, native planting, brings in bird life, offers shelter and wind protection, and lets us build boardwalks and walking tracks through these areas,” he says.

One of Dave’s proudest projects is a 100-metre boardwalk over a rain garden, set to become a thriving habitat as plants mature.

“Paerata Rise differs from other developments because of its extensive green spaces. It has playgrounds, tracks, a pump track, dog park and a flying fox under construction. More courts and a central park are planned,” Dave explains.

His favourite native plant? “The Kaka beak. Though vulnerable to pests, its red flowers are stunning.”

For Dave, it all comes down to this: “I just want to create a place where families feel safe, with plenty for kids to do and spaces for the whole family to enjoy.”

Looking After Our Neighbours: Jason Pearson’s Perspective

Jason Pearson, the night watchman of Paerata Rise, experiences the community in a unique way. On his evening rounds, he sees the rhythm of daily life and the small moments that make the township feel alive.

“Walking through the neighbourhood, I get to meet so many people and see the community in action,” he says with a smile.

His bond with the community goes beyond his job. After battling cancer, he felt the care of neighbours who regularly checked in. “The community was very concerned for me and often enquired about my health. It really showed me that I was appreciated.”

Now in remission, Jason continues his role with pride and dedication. “My favourite thing is the people. I’m trusted to keep them safe, and I do so to the best of my ability,” he says.

He adds, “The conversations I have with locals are always interesting and enjoyable – they really make the role special. I love how diverse and welcoming everyone is; it’s what makes Paerata Rise feel like home.”

A community built on what matters most

From families to landscapers and watchmen, Paerata Rise is more than a collection of houses – it’s a vision brought to life. Here, homes, gardens, and streets come alive with laughter, curiosity, and kindness. It’s a semi-rural township where belonging, building, and dreaming happen side by side.

At Paerata Rise, every corner tells a story. It’s a place where connection, family, and friendship grow just as naturally as the plants and trees around it.
